Four disappointing smartphones of 2013

Posted by Unknown Senin, 02 September 2013 0 komentar
Smartphone lovers have had a good year so far, but we are a picky lot, especially when rumour mills throw up fantastic specs and features for upcoming phones. As it turns out, often companies leave things behind on the cutting floor, dashing expectations and leaving fans disappointed. That has been the case for at least a few smartphones this year, including devices from the likes of HTC, Samsung and Sony. So, which smartphones disappointed the most?

HTC First
First! Yes, the Facebook phone that’s not the "Facebook Phone" tops this list. The HTC First could have been a great smartphone for its price and specs, but saddled with Facebook Home, it became a byword for failure. So much so that the First was put on a fire sale of sorts by AT&T, which started offering the phone at 99 cents following a month on store shelves. Thankfully, the phone didn’t cross the seas and enter India, and remains a US-only smartphone for now. We are sure even that won’t last for too long.
First
First bombed at the market

Samsung Galaxy S4
The Galaxy S4 is great in many aspects, but we were still hoping to see Samsung push the boundaries of design and come up with something that doesn’t look like a 2012 rehash. An aluminium body would have helped spice things up, but Samsung went with the same plastic body that is viewed as its biggest weakness. While we understand that plastic or polycarbonate are great in terms of practicality, but when one is paying close to Rs 40,000 for the S4, one expects superior materials and design.
S4
Will sell by the millions, but the S4 still disappointed us in terms of design and build

Micromax Canvas 4
Micromax missed more than one trick with the Canvas 4. Firstly, instead of choosing the faster MT6589 Turbo, it went with the same old MT6589 clocked at 1.2GHz. That means in terms of performance, the Canvas 4 and the Canvas HD (and a whole bunch of low-cost quad-core phones) will be on the same level. Secondly, the display should have been a 1080p affairconsidering how many new phones are coming with that particular spec. And it’s not like these are all high-brow big-name international players. Micromax only had to look at Wickedleak Wammy Passion Z and the Lemon A4 for inspiration.
Canvas 4
Canvas 4 could have been so much more

Sony Xperia ZL
The Xperia Z is a great phone in many aspects, such as its waterproof and dustproof body. But its slightly smaller "twin", the Xperia ZL, seems almost like an afterthought. Yes, we realise the ZL is supposed to be Sony’s way of cramming a big screen in a small body, but that aside, what is the point of the ZL? There was nothing in the way of differentiation for the ZL and the slightly lower price tag didn’t help it sell well either. In fact, despite the price difference, anyone shopping for a smartphone would have preferred the Z over the ZL, considering the former’s unique design and the weather-resistant shell.
ZL
The Xperia ZL, the Z's near-twin had relatively little going for it

4 Chinese smartphones that should have been Micromax's inspiration for the Canvas 4

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

The highly anticipated Micromax Canvas 4 launch has left a sour aftertaste. We’d even go so far as to say it is one of the few disappointing smartphones of the year so far. The reason is simple—over the last one year, expectations from Micromax have increased by manifold. Blu, a Florida-based company, uses the same low-cost production model that Micromax has thrived on and both companies get their smartphones manufactured by OEMs in China. There's talk that Canvas 4 is an imitation of the Blu Life One. Canvas 4 shares almost all of the Life One's specs, including the Mediatek MT6589 chipset. And it also has the same aluminium mid-housing. However, if Micromax had to look for inspiration somewhere, it could have taken cues from some Chinese-branded smartphones.

Before moving on to the list of Chinese smartphones, let’s take a look at the specifications of the Micromax Canvas 4:
  • Weight - 182 g
  • Display - True HD IPS display
  • Size - 5 inches (12.7 cm)
  • Resolution - 720 x 1280 at 294ppi (pixel density)
  • Protection - Corning Gorilla Glass
  • Chipset - Mediatek MT6589
  • Processor - 1.2GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6589
  • GPU - Power VR SGX544
  • RAM - 1GB LPDDR2 RAM
  • Storage - 16GB internal, expandable up to 32 GB via micro SD
  • Primary Camera - 13MP camera with LED flash
  • Secondary Camera - 5MP front-facing
  • Video recording - Full HD 1080p @30fps
  • Battery - 2000mAh Lithium Ion

    iBerry Auxus Nuclea N1
    iBerry
    Wins hands down

iBerry had earlier introduced some nifty tablets in the Indian market, and now the company has begun the pre-order of its feature-loaded budget smartphone dubbed Auxus Nuclea N1. While the Canvas 4 is powered by the Mediatek MT6589, the Nuclea N1 takes a step further with the Mediatek MT6589T Turbo version that is more powerful and expensive. The quad-core processor clocks at a higher 1.5GHz and overall the device weighs much less at 120.7 grams. One of the most significant feature of the Nuclea N1 is its 5-inch 1080p IPS display. The display uses OGS (One Glass Solution), which helps give it a slimmer look. It also has a bigger battery at 2800 mAh. Both Canvas 4 and Nuclea N1 come with a 13MP rear camera, but the latter has a higher 8MP front-facing camera. Moreover, Auxus Nuclea N1 has managed to beat Micromax Canvas 4 not just with better specs, but also with its cheaper price tag. iBerry has put up the Nuclea N1 for pre-order at a price of Rs 15,999, which is Rs 2,000 less than Canvas 4's launch price.

    Zopo C2
    Zopo
Better display, cheaper and lighter than the Canvas 4

The next contender is the Zopo C2, which is powered by a 1.2GHz Mediatek MT6589 quad-core processor (same as the Micromax Canvas 4) but has an upper edge when it comes to the display. The C2 comes with a full HD 1920 x 1080 5-inch IPS display. It is lighter in weight at 150 grams and also has support for dual SIMs. Most of the other specifications remain the same, such as 13MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera and 2000 mAh battery. The Zopo C2 is priced at around Rs 13,500, which is way cheaper than the Canvas 4.

    Umi X2
    Umi
16Gb and 32GB Umi X2 models priced at Rs 14,000 and Rs 16,000 respectively

The Chinese phone maker Umi had launched the X2 in the Indian market earlier this year. It also has the MTK6589 quad-core processor just like the Canvas 4, but comes with a higher 2GB RAM. The smartphone was launched with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS version but got the 4.2 update in April. It has a 5-inch IPS LCD with a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The 16GB model of Canvas 4 is priced at Rs 17,999, while Umi is selling its 16GB and 32GB X2 models for Rs 14,000 and Rs 16,000 respectively. It further offers up to 64GB of expandable memory compared to 32GB offered by the Canvas 4. Just like the Canvas 4, it has a 13MP rear camera, but a slightly inferior (on paper) 3 megapixel front-facing camera. It is lighter in weight at 155 grams and comes equipped with a better 2500 mAh battery.

    Gionee Elife E6
    Gionee ELife E6
Gionee ELife E6 comes with 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage

Launched in China today and coming to India in August, the Gionee Elife E6 has also managed to pack in a 1080p full HD display. The only hiccup seems to be its higher price tag, expected to be priced somewhere around Rs 23,000.  However, it has a faster 1.5GHz quad-core processor with 2GB RAM (likely to be Mediatek MT6589T Turbo chipset). Moreover, it's just 6.1 mm thin, making it one of the thinnest smartphones in the world. Just like the Canvas 4, it will come with a 13MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS. The smartphone is lighter at 128 grams and has a gigantic 32GB internal memory.

Just as we speak, another Indian phone maker, Spice has looked at the above smartphones for inspiration and has now launched the Spice Pinnacle for an MOP of Rs 16,999. Despite being less expensive than the Canvas 4, it has a higher resolution 1080p display and a faster 1.5GHz quad-core processor. However, the 8MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing camera could be seen as a compromise.

So what do you think? Is the Canvas 4 looking like a weaker device in comparison to these Chinese smartphones? We think Micromax has missed a beat with the Canvas 4. Let us know if you agree.

Grudge Match: Micromax Canvas 4 A210 vs Xolo Q1000S

    Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

After offering a slew of sub-Rs 15,000 smartphones, looks like desi manufacturers are shifting their focus to a sub-Rs 20,000 category.  Xolo recently announced a slim new Q1000S for Rs 18,999. The price and specs, makes it a direct competitor to Micromax’s latest smartphone, the Canvas 4 A210. We’ve put them in the ring for a showdown. Let's find out who's the winner.

    Micromax Canvas 4 A210 – Rs 17,399

    Here's the Canvas 4
Canvas 4 has a very good 5-inch display

Over the last year, expectations from Micromax have increased thanks to the success of the Canvas brand and the strategy of giving consumers superior specs at an affordable price. Its latest smartphone, the Canvas 4, packs a large 5-inch screen, but has settled for a 720p resolution instead of catching on to the hot full HD display trend. The device also feels too bulky in the hand, but it definitely feels more polished than Micromax's previous efforts. You can read our complete review of the Canvas 4 here. One highlight is bevy of software features in the Canvas 4. In burst mode, the camera shoots 99 pictures in 15 seconds, there's video pinning and simultaneous video playback as well as auto-pausing of video. Micromax has also baked in a number of other gesture-based features like blow to unlock and auto-answer.

    Xolo Q1000S – Rs 18,999
The Xolo Q1000S is quite a slim handset
The Xolo Q1000S is quite slim at 6.98mm

The successor to the Q1000, this is one of the slimmest smartphones in the market with a thickness of just 6.98 mm. The Q1000S comes with a 5-inch IPS display featuring a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, just like the Canvas 4. It is also equipped with a 13 megapixel shooter on the back, again like the Micromax phone. It includes a BSI 2 sensor, a successor to the original Backside Illuminated sensor. The rear camera is capable of recording full HD 1080p videos and has its own image stabilization technology that should allow for decent photography even with a shaky hand. We haven't got our hands on the device yet, but on paper the Q1000S looks promising.

Take a look at the comparison table below:
    Our comparison table
    Our comparison table

    Verdict:
Going purely by the specs on paper, the Xolo Q1000S emerges as the winner by a really small margin. It is one of the slimmest smartphones currently available in the market, and nearly 2mm sleeker than the Canvas 4. Both Canvas 4 and Xolo Q1000S come with 5-inch displays, sporting 720 x 1280 pixels of resolution. But the former is guarded by a Corning Gorilla glass while the latter by Asahi Dragontail glass. The Q1000S is powered by the faster Mediatek MT6589T, an over-clocked version of the MT6589 which beats inside the Canvas 4. The Xolo phone also offers a much bigger capacity battery. While both come with 16GB internal memory, it is disappointing to see that Xolo has given microSD card slot a skip. While the Xolo Q100s is launched at an MRP of Rs 18,999, the market operating price invariably drops afetr launch. So looks like the Micromax Canvas 4 finally has some real competition.

Micromax Canvas 4 Features - A Detailed Look

Posted by Unknown Senin, 22 Juli 2013 0 komentar
The Micromax Canvas 4 is there with 12.7 cms (5 inch) display screen – TRU-HD IPS display, 1.2 GHz quad core processor and Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean operating system.

    Official specs announced

More so, the expected rumors for Canvas 4 camera hold true as it has the 13 MP rear camera and 5 MP secondary camera. The memory can be expanded up to 32 GB and the phone has Dual SIM capability and dual standby as well.
As far as the design is concerned, the handset looks extremely nice with fine finishing and curved edges.Canvas4_features

Further, the features launched up till now include:

    • Vertical panorama
    • Free view angle
    • No color shift
    • 1080p recording speed
    • Face detection
    • Anti shake feature
    • Video pinning
    • Text/email or use apps while watching videos

    And more
Now we will unveil all features of the Canvas 4 in detail one by one.

    Design:

The Canvas 4 has 8.9mm anodized aluminum body that steals the show as it has super slim touch which is rounded off with the help of 100 finishing processes. Adding more, the body doubles up as antenna for improved call quality.
The top side of the phone has Wi Fi, GPS as well as BT Antenna while bottom part of housing has GSM as well as WCDMA.
    Ready to blow unlock:
You can simply blow air on the display of Canvas 4 to unlock it. Just Tap M!Unlock in order to activate the “blow/shake to unlock” feature. You can even put up a password for extra security.

    Micromax Canvas 4 Camera Features:

    canvas4_camera

With Canvas 4, you can actually shoot to thrill. You can easily shoot the videos and Images in 13 MP camera at the back for vivid detailing. The 5 MP camera is great as well and they have the Sony Sensor.
If we talk about the interface of the camera then it is exactly the same as rest of the mid range Android 4.2 gadgets available in the Indian markets. There is a left navigation bar for easy access to features like HDR, Burst shot, Panorama and smile shot. On the right side there are two buttons for shutter use. The features of OIS and zero shutter lag enable you to easily handle ISO and white balance of the shots. With ISO 1600 of the camera you can click images in two aspect ratios- 4:3 and 16:9.

    What’s the actual performance?

While operating camera practically, there are glitches of color noise in capturing bright pictures. Also the auto focus of the camera is slow leading to long adjusting time when taking shots in broad day light. Altogether on looking at the final pictures the shot came out really well with balanced color and brightness. The LED flash is quite loud while Panorama feature to capture vertical shots is impressive. However there is nothing new about the HDR mode in the phone.
You can shoot the panorama shots from bottom to top. You can shoot clear and crisp images using the rear camera that has auto focus, flash and Sony stacked image sensor features. Further, the handset supports 1080p HD recording as well as playback.
You can even connect on personal level using the 5 MP front facing camera and enjoy video chatting of great quality. The users can also record the HD Videos in 30FPS. Just zoom in and out with Canvas 4’s 4x optical zoom.
The continuous shots feature of the phone helps you to take around 99 shots in a single go. More, the users can adjust the exposure right at all locations with its High Dynamic Range photography. With its anti shake facility, you can now say goodbye to blurred and unclear images or videos.
Now finally wrapping up the performance and features of Canvas 4 A210’s Rear Camera is definitely worth a shot. There are few glitches but it is a huge leap from Canvas HD’s 8MP camera.

    Multitasking:

You can easily pin the videos to the display and also multitask at the same time between different apps. Just drag or swipe the apps to the display and that too without missing not even a single moment of your video. Just tap video pinning icon at bottom of videos menu while you watch some video in order to enable the video pinning option.

    Look away facility:

    lookaway_feature_canvas4
Now you can focus on the important activities with look away option which pauses the video that you may be watching as you look away from the display. This is so because the handset can easily detect when the user looks away from the phone and thus automatically pauses the video. As you look back again at the phone, it resumes the video.

    Watch videos simultaneously:

With Canvas 4, you can preview some other video without even pausing the one that you are currently watching.

    Swipe it off:

You can swipe to decrease or increase the volume as well as display brightness with a single swipe. Swipe vertically on left to control the brightness level and swipe right to adjust the volume.

    Half-half:

You can now do two things at the same time by pinning the browser on half the display and using the other half for doing some other thing on your Canvas 4.

    Answering/dialing:

You can simply answer a call by brining the phone close to your ears. Also, just choose a contact and bring Canvas 4 close to the ear to dial a number. This can be done by enabling the Smart Gestures under Settings menu. You need to activate the “proximity answer phone” facility in smart gestures menu as well as the proximity dial phone” to make the calls just by brining your phone close to the ear.

    Flip it:

    flip_to_unlock_canvas4

Canvas 4 can be flipped upside down to put the call on silent mode or to put the call on speaker.

    Loaded, loaded, loaded:

The Canvas 4 is all loaded with MusicHub, Fone Clay, Hike messaging, M!Live, M! security, opera mini and much more.

    Screen:

The 12.7 cms or 5 inch display screen of the Canvas 4 is amazing. It is the IPS LCD screen with corning gorilla glass. The screen has further been engineered to offer sharpest picture quality. With this, the users can easily view the high definition content from all angles without color shift. Even the high sensitivity touch functions great under water/sweat conditions.

    Processor:

You can get blazing fast performance on the phone with its 1.2 GHz quad core Cortex A7 processor. With this, you enjoy fast browsing and loading of the heavy files and games. The Power VR SGX 544 graphics processor enables the users to see visuals that are crystal clear in quality and clarity. The data speed + HSPA include 42mbps download as well as 11mbps upload.

    Operating system and memory:

The Andropid 4.2 Jelly Bean OS is sported in the Canvas 4 that has great oomph and appeal. The phone has in built memory of 16GB that can be expanded up to 32GB.

    Micromax Canvas 4 Price:

The official price declared for Micromax Canvas 4 is Rs. 17,999. It surely gives tough competition to other high end phones from reputed brands.
So, with all these official features of the Canvas 4, it is surely a phone to buy.
